The really demoralizing thing about this is "leftists" who are not only ignorant about what the ADA says but when confronted with what it does say get *angry* about it, like it's something I just made up, and insist that that can't be what it really means

Exactly. Same goes for any "externality cost" , like ecology or health standards (eg, if you have a restaurant and can't obey health code, well... ). Even libertarians should agree that it is state which provides minimum frame for economic activity. If you can't obey those...

It's, ahem, *interesting* which costs are and aren't considered just the cost of doing business. We're not arguing over whether small business owners are entitled to free rent on commercial space, for example.
