So one thing that's coming into focus for me today is that a lot of people really don't like dogs for whatever reason, they mostly keep a lid on it or lie about the reason for avoiding dogs because of our pet-loving culture, but when it's a service dog they feel free to let loose

Even as someone who likes animals generally I often don't vibe with other people's pets the way they seem to expect people to and I think the kinds of neighborhoods where people take their dogs everywhere are obnoxious Imposing pets on other people is an entitled thing to do

I already do think cat and dog people are a little much and if I were actively repulsed by cats and dogs life would be really hard sometimes And people are all performative about NOT empathizing with that, "If you hate cats you can go to hell lol"

And I've often brought up the thought experiment of what if some animal people your culture thought was disgusting - snakes or tarantulas or banana slugs - was extremely beloved in the country you lived in and people carried them around everywhere

But this is all irrelevant because SERVICE DOGS ARE NOT PETS Like shit you're allowed to be disgusted by whatever you want but if you find my goddamn EYES disgusting and demand I leave them home or keep them closed up in my eyelids around you so I CAN'T SEE you can fuck off

Or, in CS' case, the dog being their hands (picking stuff up etc because of pain and mobility issues) "Why don't you leave your hands at home Hands have a lot of germs on them, people find them unsanitary, you can get by without hands"

"Look, you and your hands have just been sitting there this whole time without actually using them for anything, clearly you don't NEED hands"

medieval mentality. Read "Cripping the Middle Ages" by Edward Wheatley. Sometimes impairment was punishment for crime.

Or, if you got "impaired" by "natural causes" , God's punishment for your sins. "He got completely blind at 33!" "Must have done something to piss off God. Shun the sinner." I find the history of the word "cretin" quite illuminating.

I don’t like dogs, and I absolutely hide it because people are super judgmental about it. But I recognize that I need to set that aside for service dogs because they’re essential to other people living fuller lives. Not liking dogs is no excuse for being ableist.

That is what he is saying
