The problem with schools beating the love of reading out of people is very easy to diagnose. A thread to follows, beginning with: the books assigned for school reading are not, generally, age-appropriate or especially interesting to teenagers (or, sometimes, even undergrads).

...I feel like this thread doesn't give kids enough credit (in the name of talking smack against the Western canon). When I was a kid, I didn't *want* to read books about people exactly like me -- I wanted to read books about people that had INTERESTING lives.

I read a lot of Goosebumps and Animorphs and Redwall. A lot of age-appropriate kidlit. But I also read a lot of ~Western Canon~ literature and historical fic.

Okay but the kids who really hate the Western canon books associated with literature classes and therefore hate literature classes in general are a real phenomenon
