Presumably, much like "stun" weapons in real life, whether it successfully stuns the person, causes great pain and enrages them but leaves them dangerously unstunned, or outright kills them is a complex matter of body weight, metabolism and species

Seriously though, the whole "useless armor" thing with stormtroopers makes a bit more sense if you assume that it *does* block most things, including stun shots, and thus forces everyone to fight with blasters on full power

Unfortunately when Finn comes up with his plan to gas the barracks in TFA it's confirmed they don't have NBC sealing (There's some serious absurdity in *both* making you wear the helmet all the time but the helmet not actually protecting you from poison gas)

It turns them into faceless drones without attachment or value. Which I guess helps, since they start to have morals and individuality once the helmets come off, even among the clones. So it doesn't armor their bodies, just their feelings?
