Much like the controversy over whether it helps to issue tasers to cops and security guards instead of making it a binary choice between real guns or no weapons There's arguments it's better to make it so escalating to violence requires an explicit commitment to lethal force

Jedi have a lot more options though. Can you force restrain someone? How about using the jedi mind trick to put people to sleep?

If I could consistently do that I'd never use the lightsaber at all.

As a kid, I always figured Knights only used Lightsabers because they weren't as advanced in the force as Masters, and that as you adopted the light side you naturally retreated from the world. But then even Yoda pulled out a lightsaber in the prequels and pbbt to that I guess.

Honestly, I feel there was no reason to make lightning an evil weapon. I always read rumors that there were renders of both the AotC and RotS Yoda fights with no saber, he just uses more lightning, and I think that would have been better

Like, everything about how lightning was a drain on life etc was from the EU at that point

How often is any form of hand-to-hand combat relevant in the context of military space operations? It must all be very esoteric for ordinary people in the galaxy, both lightsabers and force lightning, when wars are mostly fought between armies and spaceships.

TBH Obi Wan’s dialogue in the first film rather implies that it was primarily a dueling weapon.

I mean, they were meant to be like Samurai. So having it all based around a 1 on 1 duel scans st least.

Which is a little heartbreaking, because samurai wield a wide variety of specialized weapons according to circumstance, including ranged weapons like bows and muskets. Keep the OT as-is, but it would've been neat to see JKs use similarly-inspired weapons in the PT.

Enh, the Clone Wars cartoon and other materials let us know that during the Thousand Years of Peace the Jedi devolved into ceremonial peacekeepers who were able to usually intimidate people into surrender just by their presence

Once the Clone Wars begin in earnest then you start to see Jedi picking back up real military tactics and training and becoming real soldiers again, including learning a flexible array of equipment
