The idea of the original MST3K being a "takedown" of the movie is really off the mark, and is a distortion of the MST3K spirit that got locked in when RiffTrax and stuff started riffing on actually popular movies with lots of fans MST3K was about making movies *nobody liked* funhttps://twitter.com/the_moviebob/status/1219008813061242881 …

The Joel Era is very much in line w/horror host shows of the '70s and '80s -- Elvira, Morgus, (Son of) Svengoolie. Some ridicule but mostly affectionate. Movies' badness the point of watching. Mike Era is more about ridicule. These movies are bad and we're here to mock them.

I'm not sure I agree with this, though it's certainly not the first time I've heard it said. In my experience, there were a lot of Joel episodes that were just as vicious about the movie as Mike episodes, and even the nastiest of the latter tended towards self-deprecation.

For example, there are host segment of Joel episode Manos: The Hands of Fate and Mike episode Hobgoblins that are ultimately about how bad the movie is. But the latter puts the emphasis more squarely on the ridiculousness of the host and the 'bots, which takes the edge off, IMO.

Yeah, but Manos is a uniquely awful movie -- actually depressing to watch, unlike say EEGAH, which was made under similar circumstances. I never really enjoyed that episode, and I usually skip it if it comes up in the Pluto TV queue.

Heh. It's funny you mention that, because I usually point to EEGAH as the MST3K movie that makes me the most uncomfortable (largely because of the weird father/daughter "let the caveman rape you" grossness). Manos isn't exactly fun, but it's less of a slog for me.

There's a lot of grossness in some of the Joel movies. One of the biker movies had an rape scene they had to cut, back in the days before they fully vetted every selection. Manos is uniquely awful, tho. The guy who played Torgo killed himself after he made it.

Yeah, Sidehackers, I think...? Not a great episode, IMO: when the movie's not being gross, it's just boring.
I have a certain amount of affection for Manos, because of how earnestly the filmmakers were trying. But the sexism doesn't do it any favors.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
Manos always felt to me like it was actually made by desert cultists, and after they finished filming everyone was sacrificed to the Master. Like, the Dealey Plaza-level cinematography does not help things.

It is a heartwarming story that the little girl from the movie (Jackie Neyman-Jones) was surprised and delighted to see the movie on MST3K and became central to the movie's modern "fandom"
