      Arthur Chu Retweeted MovieBob Productions

The idea of the original MST3K being a "takedown" of the movie is really off the mark, and is a distortion of the MST3K spirit that got locked in when RiffTrax and stuff started riffing on actually popular movies with lots of fans MST3K was about making movies *nobody liked* funhttps://twitter.com/the_moviebob/status/1219008813061242881 …

This is accurate. I've made this observation myself before, but: MST3K itself is an anachronism of when weird/bad movie "fandom" culture grew up around TV entertainment *not* being itself fully manipulable - you watched "what was on" and if it was bad or boring you joked. https://twitter.com/sadydoyle/status/1218957442035388416 …

That's the whole thing, they got surprisingly little blowback from the people in the movies they were mocking, because everyone involved knew they were made badly on a shoestring budget as shovelware

Gamera was, IIRC, the main exception because in Japan tokusatsu is serious business in Daiei was actually kind of offended.

I believe the original pitch was a video of them riffing on “The Godfather.” The only reason they did those old b-movies was because it was so much cheaper to license. The idea of “lampooning bad movies” was never the goal.

Sure, but I've seen Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu's act and they both say they're against riffing on good movies

Not only that, the movies found an audience that loved these films that otherwise would have languished in obscurity. The short lived MST conventions invited a lot of the actors/actresses in the films they lampooned.
