The idea of the original MST3K being a "takedown" of the movie is really off the mark, and is a distortion of the MST3K spirit that got locked in when RiffTrax and stuff started riffing on actually popular movies with lots of fans MST3K was about making movies *nobody liked* funhttps://twitter.com/the_moviebob/status/1219008813061242881 …

This is accurate. I've made this observation myself before, but: MST3K itself is an anachronism of when weird/bad movie "fandom" culture grew up around TV entertainment *not* being itself fully manipulable - you watched "what was on" and if it was bad or boring you joked. https://twitter.com/sadydoyle/status/1218957442035388416 …

That's the whole thing, they got surprisingly little blowback from the people in the movies they were mocking, because everyone involved knew they were made badly on a shoestring budget as shovelware

The Joel Era is very much in line w/horror host shows of the '70s and '80s -- Elvira, Morgus, (Son of) Svengoolie. Some ridicule but mostly affectionate. Movies' badness the point of watching. Mike Era is more about ridicule. These movies are bad and we're here to mock them.

And that arguably is the RiffTrax ethos as well. Could be competent or even decent movies... we're still gonna make fun of them. Always seemed a bit more corrosive to me. YMMV.

I sincerely love bad art for what it is and it brings me more genuine joy and mirth than the vast majority of "good" art. I hate when people who seem to share my little hobby are in it to be mean.

To be fair that venom has always been there. The Medveds' Golden Turkeys books -- generally considered the first mainstream celebration of "bad" movies -- have an unpleasant nastiness when you reread them today. The chapters on Ed Wood & Glen Or Glenda -- yeesh.

Honestly, modern nitpick criticism bears almost no resemblance to MST3K. It was just so... wholesome? Oddly enough, the closest thing I can think of today is CinemaWins, which, aesthetically speaking, couldn't be more different.

I never liked Riff Trax because, imo, they started going after popular movies for traffic/clicks sake

That's not why. They started out on when online video distribution wasn't a thing quite yet. They went for popular movies because they only distributed a commentary track, and there's no business model in doing that for obscure films when no one owns the DVD.
