The best and worst thing about games is the artificial tedium It's there because we actually want it to be there so we can punish ourselves and make beating the game feel like a real accomplishment when it isn't really that much of onehttps://twitter.com/Thafnine/status/1217490213968236544 …

When people make fun of games for "feeling like work" they miss that people actually like work Work simulators are highly appealing Contrary to some people's analysis, unemployed gamers often seriously wish they had a job but can't get one

The key thing being that simulated work is a much more controlled and stable environment than real work, and one that's always ultimately consensual where you can turn the game off

That consensual part is what employers dislike the most, though. They reallllyyyy want that control.

Not only that some games provide you a feeling of guaranteed progression(like, your efforts are pretty much proportional to the rewards you get), something that not everybody can feel from their IRL jobs.

(Which I wonder if it's really a good thing... because when I think about incels I feel like some of their entitlement comes from the fact that they are too used to the idea that their actions should be rewarded.)

See, that last bit is the tricky part. I pretty recently wrote this whole big blog post about this- https://secretgamergirl.tumblr.com/post/190067272150/the-workification-of-games … I'm not calling out tedium as bad here, because I don't think of that as "work" inherently, but games increasingly demand you punch your time clock daily.
