Something for folks to consider in the "It's biological in origin! No, it's social/experiential in origin!" trans discourse...

Trans identities may not all come from the same origins for the entire populace. Perhaps for some, it's mostly social/experiential in its genesis. Perhaps for others, its mostly biological. We have no way of knowing how this parses out for the entire populace of trans people.

This. I know for a gosh dang certainty that the means by which I am a girl is not the same means by which many trans women are girls.

Honestly, there are probably thousands upon thousands of variations on all of this. Humanity is a mosaic of many ways of being. It always has been. It's just our human thirst for control and simplicity which tries to shove everything into tiny little boxes of false understanding.

There's a very useful word from academese more people should know, "reifying", which can be defined in various complex ways but is just the Latin way of saying "making it into a thing" Most things aren't really objectively things, we made them things

And by so doing we confuse ourselves What is depression, what causes it, and how can it be treated Well that's a stupid question because we invented the idea of "depression" It describes a bunch of different things that just have one quality in common

It's like wanting one answer for why a car won't start (is the battery dead, is it out of gas, is the starter disconnected, has the anti-theft interlock been engaged, has the entire engine been stolen, are you not even in a real car but a nonworking museum replica)

For things that are concrete and visible this stuff is obvious but for a lot of stuff that's inside the black box of the human brain we just use these easy labels And then when it turns out there's a bunch of different things inside the labeled box we start yelling at each other

"How DARE you say that depression is caused by a bad environment and can be cured by moving to a different place" "How dare YOU say it CAN'T be"
