The funniest thing about JJ Abrams' Star Wars is how shameless he was about putting all his actor friends in it If Rian Johnson were JJ Abrams, Rose Tico would've been played by Joseph Gordon Levitt and DJ would've been John Darnielle

It's hard to even make this joke because Johnson just doesn't do this mostly I guess his version of TRoS would've suddenly introduced another Rebel pilot who was also played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt

"This isn't a fair comparison, Abrams' career has been a lot more extensive than Johnson's" No see the fact that it's been so long since Alias makes it more egregious that Greg Grunberg is randomly here not less

Eric Weiss, Michael Vaughn's friend at the CIA (the guy Sydney's handler/love interest talks to when he's not around) In Star Wars he's Snap, the bearded Rebel pilot who discusses how scary Starkiller Base is in TFA and then dies to give Poe his "BIIIIGGS" moment in TRoS

It doesn't quite land because Snap being Poe's best friend comes across as a pretty big retcon, since they didn't really interact in TFA and when Poe had a whole big arc in TLJ Snap wasn't even in that movie

Rian Johnson did not call Greg Grunberg back for TLJ because he probably didn't see the point

It's funny because the Resistance gets whittled down to very few people in TLJ but we don't see him and yet he must have survived into TRoS, standing just out of frame

It's also funny because while I don't hate Grunberg as an actor or anything, he's been in every single one of JJ Abrams' projects since they were in film school together as his "good luck charm" and... it shows

He couldn't physically appear in Star Trek 2009 because of family issues so Abrams had him record the voiceover to play Kirk's stepfather whose car he steals

He was even in Lost, he's the airline pilot who dies in the pilot (this is an intentional pun apparently, the episode being titled only "Pilot") It was a fakeout to make you think he'd be a main character (because he's Greg Grunberg) before he's the first casualty of the monster

Yeah but JJ didn't actually direct that one
