RotS did have flash-forwards, which were in TESB and AotC (Luke and Anakin's visions) but not actually shown to the audience. My feeling is that Abrams just doesn't know how to entrust the audience w/important information unless it is shown.

Not quite the same thing to be fair.

True, though it did feel a little off. OT movies always stuck to objective reality & it was up to us to interpret what the characters said they were envisioning. Maybe Vader in the cave was an exception since it was a spirit journey-type thing.

That was arguably necessary because Luke didn't know for sure it was a vision, the idea is supposed to be he's briefly terrified Vader is actually here and has found him

But yeah this is the biggest difference with ANH The original Star Wars was a big deal because it had this disorienting sense of thrusting you into this massive imaginary universe where nothing was familiar and yet it all felt familiar because it drew on ancient tropes

But yeah what I meant by this was the original Star Wars had this very strong faith in just straight up showing you what was happening and not expositing more than it had to Even what exposition we got was limited by there being no "real life" viewpoint character

No one explains what the Empire is, it just came after the Republic and is bad We don't get any explanation on what "droids" are (a conscious choice by Lucas to avoid the familiar word "robot"), we just see them in action

The deal with the iconic opening crawl is that it's the only extradiegetic narration we get "This is the setup, now watch what happens" and we watch what happens

In a sense the flashback heavy nature of TRoS is betraying this storytelling philosophy It reflects how heavy this series has gotten with mythology and baggage that it has to live up to

It's notable because the prequels didn't do this even when they would've made people happy if they did Anakin's origin is shrouded and stays that way We have Shmi verbally telling Qui-Gon and us "There was no father" and that's it, we have to take that on faith

Palpatine's Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise is just a story, told in misleading and veiled language by a known liar who's clearly manipulating Anakin, and we're left with no clear assurance that Plagueis was even real, much less that he or Palpatine was Anakin's "real father"

But it's telling that for a substantial group of fans that this meant that Plagueis was "real," to the extent that there was an entire EU novel about his relationship w/the young Palpatine. I always felt that the EU was monetized fanfic. Lucas clearly never cared about it.

"Oh, so you wanna kill off a legacy character? How about..." *throws dart at poster* "...Chewbacca?" "Oh, thank god! We were so tired of typing 'Chewie growled in assent' over and over again! You're a genius, Mr. Lucas!" "De nada."
