      I always thought she and Snoke were supposed to be connected. Like they were embodiments of different aspects of the Force, though not Jedi or Sith. Maybe even older than those factions. Honestly it's not hard to think of much better movies than what we got.

      I barely remember what Ochi looked like. (Why are there flashbacks?) Abrams is not good with visuals. In Star Wars even minor characters/ships should be memorable, and TRoS has nothing like that. Neither does TLJ though it looks 100x better than either of the other sequels.

      Struck by the LotR influences in TRoS. The Wayfinder hisses and whispers like the Ring. The random flashbacks are very Peter Jackson. It feels like the movie was cut down from a lot of material, some of which was never finished.

      I've noticed that the Sequel Trilogy does a lot of stuff the George Lucas movies conspicuously avoided Like for one thing Lucas' Star Wars movies are always told straight through with no flashbacks or conspicuous time skips (in keeping with the old school pulp feel}

      RotS did have flash-forwards, which were in TESB and AotC (Luke and Anakin's visions) but not actually shown to the audience. My feeling is that Abrams just doesn't know how to entrust the audience w/important information unless it is shown.

      True, though it did feel a little off. OT movies always stuck to objective reality & it was up to us to interpret what the characters said they were envisioning. Maybe Vader in the cave was an exception since it was a spirit journey-type thing.

      That was arguably necessary because Luke didn't know for sure it was a vision, the idea is supposed to be he's briefly terrified Vader is actually here and has found him

          But yeah this is the biggest difference with ANH The original Star Wars was a big deal because it had this disorienting sense of thrusting you into this massive imaginary universe where nothing was familiar and yet it all felt familiar because it drew on ancient tropes

          Well, not just ancient. Lucas borrowed from a lot of non-SF influences (Searchers, Wizard of Oz, Dam Busters) and even if you didn't like or get science fiction you could follow the story. Not like 2001 (which is a big influence design-wise).

          Also to play up the metaphysical side of the Force, that it wasn't just psi powers (which were still pretty common in SF at the time due to the John W. Campbell Jr. influence), but involved a mystical/otherworldly side as well (visions, ghosts)

          I remember in 1980 it was very confusing. Like for a second the audience thought Luke had killed the real Vader. TESB got kind of a mixed reception upon release. People tend not to realize that bc today's it's generally considered the best SW movie.
