I though Obi-Wan was involved with a Mandalorian woman from the Clone Wars cartoon? I’m not really familiar with the show. It does seem odd that Rey doesn’t go to Naboo at the end of TRoS, bc she probably does have some living relatives there.

If you found out you were secretly a Hitler how eager would you be to find the other secret Hitlers

I was thinking more of her mom's people. As far as we know Palpatine only had the one son. But that would’ve been an interesting idea — make Naboo the First Order's capital planet. Like Argentina after WWII.

This planet we think of as a center of culture and peaceful philosophy— have it turn out to be the galaxy's heart of darkness.

There's a lot of hints that Naboo is a reactionary backwater and the stuff that makes us supposed to like it is just more "traditional heartland" discourse like American conservative pundits spew about flyover country

The new Disney canon says the Empire was officially homophobic and this was an attitude Palpatine brought to the cosmopolitan city world of Coruscant from his old fashioned Mid Rim home planet

Also come on, whatever they say about the Naboo and the Gungans being "symbiotic" it sure comes off as the Gungans being an oppressed and exploited indigenous population

Where does the spice come from? Naboo's wealth is based on mining drugs and exporting it. They're totally the 19th century British Empire in practice.

I thought their economy was based on plasma. Supposedly the Trade Federation was based on the consortium that overthrew Queen Liliuokalanni of Hawaii. Also the Dutch and English East Trading Companies.

Yeah but the metaphor is fucked up by the fact that Amidala, a (white) human, is clearly not the ruler of the indigenous people of Naboo, Boss Nass is

And yeah Naboo doesn't mine spice (an addictive drug), which would be a big issue if they did, they mine plasma - that's what the Gungans use as weapons in the boomas

Remember the miners that get blamed for the bomb attack at the start of AotC? In the DK visual guide for the Rebels show it says they mine spice on some of Naboo's moons.
