Setting humans up on the Martian surface and making it self-sufficient is a is a lot harder than you'd think. A lot of the energy and construction resources we take for granted just aren't there. I think Mars would be permanently dependent on a long supply chain from off-world.

Yeah - and there's a difference between 'physically possible' and 'reasonably efficient' that would bankrupt any of these projects.

Any large city on Earth is more or less dependent global supply chains. I guess the underlying question here is at which size those global supply chains become necessary and whether it's possible to develop a self-contained one on Mars.

This is where mining asteroids come in handy as they show in The Expanse...the martians basically ripping off on belters and what they can mine and excavate...and continue on building..which is doable.. As long as u have the Epstein drive
