Portman was 18 in 1999, though I suppose she was younger during filming. And as has already been said, she played the role so much older. I spent most of the film being weirded out that these two people were eventually going to have sex.

Most of the principal photography was two years before release with an unusually long post-production (which at the time was said to be because the FX were so state of the art and now seems more like damage control)

And yeah I mean she has to play older because this 14-year-old is supposed to be the elected ruler of an entire planet The whole thing is nuts

So what, she formed an exploratory committee when she was 12? She spent eighth grade traveling the globe campaigning and meeting with donors?

I just looked it up and it says she got her start as the wunderkind Mayor of Theed, the planetary capital, at the age of 12 Oh man she's Mayor Pete

1. I now need to see this sequel of Amidala’s rise to power, starting when she was 10 by visiting local county fairs etc.

2. Re Lloyd’s performance: Last year I watched the prequels, with an great sound system, and most of Anakin’s dialog is ADR/dubbed in post (and not very well, if you know how that stuff works). When he *wasn’t* dubbed, he sounded perfectly normal and pretty good actually,

I saw Lloyd in an ER rerun about a year or so after TPM and he was perfectly fine in it. Not great, but not wooden either. It really does seem like TPM ruined his career and life in general.

Those movies were poison to everyone in them who didn't already have a career. Except Keira Knightley, who got away with it because a lot of people still don't realize she was in them.

They thought she was Portman’s CGI double And then her character got blown up in the first two minutes of AotC

Nah, Keira Knightley's character wasn't there (she's not in the cast of AotC) Disney did a tie-in book, Queen's Shadow, where she's the main character, she ends up vowing to discover the real truth about Padme's death and becoming a Rebel

The dead handmaiden in AotC is Cordé, played by Verónica Segura (so, yes, the Latina handmaiden takes the hit) Keira Knightley was Sabé

Fun fact, she's not the only actress to play one of Padmé's handmaidens before she broke out Rose Byrne is Dormé, the one who stays behind on Coruscant to impersonate her while she goes on to the love nest with Anakin
