He's been so open about the fact that he always thought Star Wars was a bullshit project from the beginning That's why they created Lando to replace Han in case they had to kill him off in ESB

Han's idgaf attitude in ANH is a direct reflection of Ford's attitude in real life I mean he'd actually quit acting and then got roped into doing this movie because Lucas had hired him to stand in for Han while auditioning people to play Luke and then just hired him for real

To be fair, I think there's a general DGAF attitude in ANH among all the principals. They realized the dialogue was designed to be sort of naive and earnest and tried to have fun with it -- e.g. Hamill's overt whininess.

You don't see this attitude in the other two movies, b/c Lucas had brought in Kasdan to punch up the dialogue so it sounded more naturalistic and hip. ANH and the prequels are actually very similar in that regards, it's just that nobody ever seems to have goofed off on the PT.

It sounds like Lucas got way more tyrannical as a director when the prequels got made (see also refusing to delegate the writing and directing duties to nearly the same degree) And this was compounded by the extensive use of green screen

There's leaked footage where you can see Hayden Christiansen doing the grueling process of giving different line reads over and over again and Lucas keeps picking the worst one

Lucas’ background as a documentary filmmaker explains this. Often he wasn’t interested in which performances were the best, but which ones felt the most “real.”

Yeah there's this footage of an actual experienced child actor reading for Anakin and doing an actual good job and then he passes on him in favor of Jake Lloyd, who sounds like he barely understands the script, because he's so "natural" and "unrehearsed"

You can see it's mainly just that he's besotted with how adorable Jake Lloyd is and the expression on his face through the audition is kind of unfortunate given what we know about the whole wanting Marion to be 12 situation

Well yeah, and there’s also the casting of Portman, who had a kinda creeper fan contingent back in the ‘90s.

The whole general situation of making both characters absurdly young compared to what people had expected

I think Lucas never really intended the age difference to be more than 3-4 years, but Portman acts so much more mature than Lloyd that the notion of these two ever hooking up at any age seems grossly inappropriate

It's a five year gap, he's 9 and she's 14 Which is one of those things that becomes less and less of an issue as both parties age, but when they actually hook up at the age of 19 and 24 is still pretty iffy
