Not if you pay him enough. He's been really open about that, he will be in anything if you pay him enough. "Enough" just gets pretty high

"Did you get emotional when you put on the Han Solo outfit again?" "No, I got paid."

Which, as people have pointed out, is what everyone wanted to hear Han's actor say, but also, I'm pretty sure he was genuine

He's been so open about the fact that he always thought Star Wars was a bullshit project from the beginning That's why they created Lando to replace Han in case they had to kill him off in ESB

Han's idgaf attitude in ANH is a direct reflection of Ford's attitude in real life I mean he'd actually quit acting and then got roped into doing this movie because Lucas had hired him to stand in for Han while auditioning people to play Luke and then just hired him for real

To be fair, I think there's a general DGAF attitude in ANH among all the principals. They realized the dialogue was designed to be sort of naive and earnest and tried to have fun with it -- e.g. Hamill's overt whininess.

You don't see this attitude in the other two movies, b/c Lucas had brought in Kasdan to punch up the dialogue so it sounded more naturalistic and hip. ANH and the prequels are actually very similar in that regards, it's just that nobody ever seems to have goofed off on the PT.

It sounds like Lucas got way more tyrannical as a director when the prequels got made (see also refusing to delegate the writing and directing duties to nearly the same degree) And this was compounded by the extensive use of green screen

I think that may have also just been the extent to which cast/crew were willing to defer to his vision. Recall that until TPM came out, everyone thought he was an infallible genius. ANH wasn’t burdened w/this & is much looser/more playful.

Yeah the feeling you get hearing from Hamill and Fisher talk about ANH is it was a wild adventure, getting to fly to Tunisia and whatnot to make this ridiculous movie They had a ton of fun for not very much money While TPM was the exact reverse

People getting paid enormous amounts of money for this big cultural event everyone felt like they had no choice but to say yes to that was this grueling slog

McDiarmid is the only one who seems to be having fun.
