Harrison Ford actually said he was looking forward to doing an Indiana Jones movie where Indy isn't a lone hero with no family for once, circling back to the family themes with Holy Grail But then they officially confirmed Mutt isn't coming back so I dunno

There's leaked footage where you can see Hayden Christiansen doing the grueling process of giving different line reads over and over again and Lucas keeps picking the worst one
-
Lucas’ background as a documentary filmmaker explains this. Often he wasn’t interested in which performances were the best, but which ones felt the most “real.”

I think that may have also just been the extent to which cast/crew were willing to defer to his vision. Recall that until TPM came out, everyone thought he was an infallible genius. ANH wasn’t burdened w/this & is much looser/more playful.
-
Yeah the feeling you get hearing from Hamill and Fisher talk about ANH is it was a wild adventure, getting to fly to Tunisia and whatnot to make this ridiculous movie They had a ton of fun for not very much money While TPM was the exact reverse

That also might have been because Lucasfilm was a nonunion org. If Spielberg or Howard agreed to direct it’d probably violate their DGA contracts.

He did have collaborators — Tom Stoppard of all people did an uncredited polish of RotS. And there was a listed co-writer on AotC. But I think people tended to avoid working on the PT for fear they’d get blamed if they turned out poorly. Messing up George’s vision.

Auteur theory is, in fact, bad

Tom Scharpling did a great Best Show interview w/John Hodgman a few years back where they talked about the lack of creative friction on the PT. JH called them “chilling” and “the unfettered emanations of a deranged mind.”https://youtu.be/BsxqQBLnEkk
