So something that's been gnawing at me about the attack helicopter story is this, and let me explain: what if The Last Jedi had had a trans character? And not, like, a Holdo or Rose, but someone ambiguous like DJ. Would y'all still love the movie's provocativeness and "ambiguity"

Like, what I'm saying is everyone's mad about the attack helicopter story because they can't tell if the author is saying something pro-trans, anti-trans, or just writing with complex feelings from a trans or cis perspective. That's not seen as acceptable when you're trans

But then we dogpile big franchises for not having more LGBT characters, while also praising them for including ambiguity. We're only happy with our representation when it's unquestionably didactic and positive though

The problem is the paucity of representation, as always

Asian-Americans loved Parasite even though pretty much everyone in it is awful one way or another because it's an Asian movie from an Asian milieu and there's none of this fear of being a shande

And the problem I think is that the very nature of what the attack helicopter person was trying to do with the meme was really high stakes Like she was saying "I'm going to make this the official canon for the meme, it's going to be what everyone cites as the rebuttal"

Was she? The bio’s one line (she’s seven years older than me) and everything else is gossip and I don’t think “making the One True Statement” follows from “spitefully use meme as prompt” any more than “write a trans character” means “write the One Tr— Well, that’s a bad example.

(I have a ~conspiracy? theory it’s specifically the intersection of that meme on the transphobe side and the week or whatever in 2016? when queer twitter got into a tizzy about that one paper on drone pilots experiencing body and/or gender incongruity, because proSF is very slow)

I mean, someone claiming to speak for her has said she is trans and has asked for the story to be pulled

I did hear that after. Asked for it to be pulled + pulled anything she had in other submission queues, ie signaling intent to stop writing? I think?

Yeah The latter seems kind of dramatic but in all likelihood she's been lurking here and elsewhere watching the reactions and understandably taking it hard

If I hadn’t built up spite-based tolerance by way of this long watching it be the kind of thing people ask for it’s what I’d do, honestly. I’ve just never been put on anything like that level of spot, and had the chance to calcify into reasonably robust defensive hatred first.
