Or, in other words: Indiana Jones isn't a pulp academic with the racist attitudes "of his times," he's a terrible academic in any era and also a mercenary who uses an incoherent racist justification to seek glory or money

I feel like reading Doctor Aphra comics makes this really apparent, she's exactly like him except that she suffers consequences and gets kicked from academia

Similarly, his pederasty isn't actually excused by anyone in his time, which is why his victim sets her bar on fire rather than willingly interact with him, is a self destructive alcoholic, and doesn't actually forgive him even after he helps her survive a Nazi kidnapping

Indiana Jones is straight up a villain protagonist, and given that it's George Lucas, I think it's reasonable to infer that he knows this

Wasn't Lucas the one who wanted Marion to have been even younger, like 12, when Indy seduced her? From the way he talks about it, it doesn't sound like he would have seen that as villainous behavior.

No, to give him the particle of fairness he deserves, he wanted her to be "scandalously" young because he wanted the titillation factor of it, to give Indy something to be self-loathing about (and that's very much the emotional tone of the scene in the movie)

What sucks about it though is they both-sides it, they make it ambiguous because they say Indy just responded to her coming onto him and she initiated it ...Which is extremely disturbing if she's 12

Yeah, now that I'm thinking about it, Indiana Jones is definitely one of those characters that the moral panic folks would be totally right to condemn as a pedophile, if it weren't for the fact that he's not really culturally relevant to the current generation

It kind of messes with attempts to riff on his character, too, like Doctor Aphra is supposed to be "evil Indiana Jones" but having screwed a 12 year old and coming on to her students is replaced with "has a cyborg fetish". And yeah, she helps the in setting "Nazis" but...

...at best in weighing her vs. Indy that comes out as a tossup and given how we treat other Imperials I think Aphra is clearly the more forgivable human

Lucas saying Marion was 12 (he actually goes all the way down to 10 in his pitch) is not actually canon, the novelization just goes ahead and uses the highest age he suggested, which was 15

For Indy to actually try to defend himself with "You knew what you were doing" if she was 12 at the time is completely insane, even for the 1930s

It's kind of darkly hilarious how Lucas starts to get kind of manic with this idea of his in the pitch meeting and just keeps making her age lower every time he says it Like the Arrested Development joke with the price of Gob's suit
