TBH I feel like a lot of classism has transferred over to PC gaming. Why I was never amused by that "PC Master Race" stuff.

That said, current gaming is frelling expensive (games in Canada often cost $90 CAD at retail, or about 20% of average weekly income. When I worked retail, I could only afford games during summer overtime.) I went all in on previous gen gaming.

I played a lot monochrome DOS versions of arcade knockoffs, that I could play on my mom’s work-at-home PC, along with pirated floppy versions of games my friends had, with the occasional legit EA Sports game (also on floppy).

Even computer gaming was expensive because computers were hella more expensive than they are now; consider what kind of gaming rig you could get for $5K--that's what an Apple IIe with a monitor and disk drive cost in today dollars.

Only if you believe that video games still cost $60, which few to none actually do DLCs, Season Passes, Mastery Passes, intentional grindy design to make skip-the-grind microtransactions mandatory, loot boxes, etc. etc.

But at the same time, we also had libraries and video stores that rented out video games at a price that was quite accessible. We don’t have that anymore.
