Having the actors time out and choreograph their actions so you get "one cool move per shot" is of course absolutely nothing like what real fights look like That's why real fights are not entertaining and should be discouraged by society through laws and education

Honestly I don't think most of the people complaining even want "realism" in fights, it's just an easy concept to reach for to contrast with fight scenes they don't like. But dig into the complaints and what they're unhappy with is lack of threat and lack of consequences.

The trend in Western cinema is to show the combatants getting the shit beaten out of them "realistically," but lots of HK cinema gets to the same place by a different route. Constant escalation to present threat, and clear narrative consequences stemming from the fight.

an incredibly exhausting scene. I was bored to tears. I gasped. Then it looped around to amazement. then bored tedium. then amazement again. what a rollercoaster of feelings. note: if any of you dorks try this technique i will piledriver you into the next century

Spatial and movement coherence is much more important than "realism," imo. The obsession with "realism" in film is overrated in general, and often gets in the way of better story/performance/drama.

Honestly why no one should give me an action movie because it’d be grounded except for when the action kicks in. Then that’s when the anime bullshit would start. And no reason or explanation given
