Elizabeth Warren has called to break up facebook, institute a wealth tax, and has put forward an impressive and sweeping disability platform. she has an education policy that embraces reparations. that's not a centrist platform in the context of presidential politics.

Breaking up Facebook accomplishes nothing. Wealth tax would be great if it had ever worked when tried in other countries. Social safety nets that require paperwork are not accessible to many, so any proposal that doesn't include UBI is flawed from the start.

breaking up monopolies benefits everyone but monopolists. wealth taxes to fund social programs are good, and conditions in the US are pretty different than those elsewhere. UBI is often flawed too; the fact that programs aren't perfect isn't a reason to ignore folks they'd help.

Why do you consider Facebook a monopoly?

In my specific, personal case: because if I want to keep up with my friends, it's the only platform that all of my friends are on. By contrast, I can phone whoever I like regardless of whose network they're on.

The problem is Facebook is a "natural monopoly", as are all network-based businesses (you don't pick the "best" network, you pick the one everyone else is already on) Telephony went through this too, trying to enforce competition among multiple competing phone companies is hard

There's a huge difference between "most popular" and "monopoly," though. Facebook has purchased other companies, but doesn't control any entire market. I don't know of any legal reason to break them up.
