The one thing people never really sell hard enough about LotR is that its principal arc is about the nerdy fat guy who's scared all the time and only came along to support his crush evolving into the actual badass action hero of the whole sagahttps://twitter.com/edsbs/status/1216526657277845506 …

Did the movies change that? I saw the Rankin-Bass one like 50 times as a kid and it keeps overwriting my memories of that one. Doesn't help when people keep enabling me with stuff like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7IIKE3k-_s …

In the book, the orcs are terrified when they hear him coming, because the sheer number of powerful magical artifacts he's carrying by that point give him a palpable aura of menace which, unlike Frodo, he directs outward at threats to his bestie.
-
Yeah they speculate that Shelob was defeated in battle by some kind of Great Elf Hunter in Mordor to seek glory and Frodo was said Elf's slave he used as bait (Orcs do a lot of nasty projection when evaluating their enemies' culture and behavior)

I think one reason people get so mixed up is Frodo's so brooding and angsty which is what we've come to expect from such heroes, while Sam's so practical and grounded.
-
2. I've heard it safe Sam's the classic ISFJ underappreciated rock of the group. Admittedly MBTI is often BS, but the Sam style hero does seem underrepresented in literature.

Frodo bears the burden of command and Sam does the actual work I always found the idea compelling that without Gollum, the series probably ends with Sam and Frodo wrestling for the ring and them both falling together into Mount Doom
-
Tolkien based Frodo and Sam's relationship on the officer/NCO divide in the British army, which back in the day was a class divide as much as a chain of command divide

I wish the movies had squeezed in a post-credits sequence from the appendices where Sam was taken to the Gray Havens and taken across the sea, the last of the Ring-Bearers.
