This is a good take, that is entirely ruined by the fact that all I can think of now is: who is the guy fieri of authors?

I remember when 50 Shades was MOTU and only 4 chapters in and the author was a sweet humble Brit from the Twilighted forums we only knew as “Icy”.

As someone who wrote fan fiction for years before moving on to pro writing, I have... thoughts. Namely that being an author trying to make a living by it S U C K S and there's no way anyone who didn't actually love writing would do it.

Yes! I feel like they’re making a lot of assumptions about what people engage with outside fanfiction to begin with; that’s not profic versus fanfic dichotomy language, not on scale or medium or assumed number involved, that’s... “okay yes I too feel disappointment at the MCU”

I wish we reified the free part less, though Undergirds the amount of hostility people feel they can show dinky small creators and anyone who goes pro or gets a job (any money is too much money, how could you), makes an unnecessarily insular unnecessarily binary idea of labor

In the past 5 years or so I’ve seen “you do this for FREE” go from a reason to support people socially (community, comments) to a reason to deride someone for speaking up about wanting to not be alone at the wrong time (it’s supposed to be enough alone you ghoul)

This phenom is fascinating to me as someone who desperately hid the fact that I wrote some x-files fanfic back in the day. From dirty secret to alternative canon.
