You know what's interesting? Star Wars is inarguably better at alien creature design than Star Trek. But Star Trek is much better at alien worldbuilding / characterization than Star Wars.

Like on TOS they barely tried and the TNG-ENT era is so immensely mockable with its rubber forehead alien issue (aside from a few exceptions like Klingons). Only with the new movies and Discovery have they gotten bolder and wilder with makeup.

But in Star Wars, especially in the movies, aliens are almost always just decoration. Very few are actually main characters, unlike in Star Trek where a significant fraction of them are (and the fraction is even higher if you focus on the most popular characters).

Like, there's no equivalent to Spock, Worf, Odo, or Seven of Nine (technically a human, but you know) in Star Wars. There's barely even a Troi or a Dax (mostly human with notable quirks).

I mean, the most important alien protagonists in Star Wars are Jar Jar Binks, Chewbacca, Yoda, and Ahsoka. And aside from Jar Jar (which most people will happily ignore for good reasons), the culture of each character is basically irrelevant.

(The EU actually filled out Chewbacca's background a lot but in the movies we don't really learn much about him or Wookiees.)

It's kind of interesting. In Star Trek, aliens look mostly human but get more cultural and psychological detail. And in Star Wars, they look more alien but act more human and have less elaborate characterization.

Yup, that's because the more shit you have to make them wear the harder it is to find a good actor for the part and the harder it is for them to act

It's also because the two franchises are dealing with different themes. Star Trek is about being a United Nations ambassador working for Space NATO; Star Wars is about dynastic family drama in the Space Roman Empire.

I mean, sort of When Star Wars started it was just a wild pulp adventure in space, the family drama stuff is a retcon

Even in the first movie, Luke was supposedly following in his father’s footsteps. Anyway, my main point is that Star Wars is set in an empire, while Star Trek is set in (and around) a federation.
