Of course the whole concept that asking "What would you say if I asked you this question" is different from actually asking the question is one of the ways logic works differently from natural language

I think that's why asking what the other guard would say is the right choice, both for the in story guard not ignoring the difference, and helping the reader who isn't familiar with the puzzle.
