But in Star Wars, especially in the movies, aliens are almost always just decoration. Very few are actually main characters, unlike in Star Trek where a significant fraction of them are (and the fraction is even higher if you focus on the most popular characters).

Like, there's no equivalent to Spock, Worf, Odo, or Seven of Nine (technically a human, but you know) in Star Wars. There's barely even a Troi or a Dax (mostly human with notable quirks).

I mean, the most important alien protagonists in Star Wars are Jar Jar Binks, Chewbacca, Yoda, and Ahsoka. And aside from Jar Jar (which most people will happily ignore for good reasons), the culture of each character is basically irrelevant.

(The EU actually filled out Chewbacca's background a lot but in the movies we don't really learn much about him or Wookiees.)

It's kind of interesting. In Star Trek, aliens look mostly human but get more cultural and psychological detail. And in Star Wars, they look more alien but act more human and have less elaborate characterization.

Yup, that's because the more shit you have to make them wear the harder it is to find a good actor for the part and the harder it is for them to act

Even with CGI - Andy Serkis plays all the mocap characters in everything because it's a legitimately difficult skill

I would argue that even in a fully animated series, where this problem is reduced the most, it's still a problem - designing and animating a truly alien character in such a way that we can relate to it enough for it to carry a story is an inherent challenge

Supergirl ran into this problem with the white/green Martians. The green Martians, who are good, are actors in makeup and look pretty sympathetic. The evil white Martians were extremely unappealing CGI. Then they wrote a good white Martian character and had to work around that.

The "solution" they came up with was that she feels so guilty about the crimes her people committed that she chooses to look like a green Martian. Which, given the overt Holocaust references in the Martian storyline was pretty massively problematic.

I don't really watch the CW shows but I started watching the Crisis on Infinite Earths and just knowing how gonzo the original Monitor and Anti-Monitor designs in the comics were it's just hilarious to me that this is the stage play version

The Monitor is just a guy with odd facial hair, the Anti-Monitor is the same guy but color Inverted

The Monitor doesn't stray too far from the comics design. Assuming the comic design is meant to read as "big frowny face" but not, like, inhumanly so.pic.twitter.com/iZL9LCeooE
