Interesting to think about how dissimilar the two Bens in Star Wars are. Like do they share anything in common besides "has lightsaber"?

My pet theory is that Ben Solo is actually named after Ben Ford, Harrison Ford's actual son, and not Ben Kenobi, who had no connection to him, little connection to either of his parents, and wasn't even his real name anyways

The only explanation I can come up with for "Ben" is that Leia and Han let Luke choose the baby's name. Luke not only knew Obi-Wan, but was the only person who called him "Ben" consistently. He's the only one who would name a child that.

Leia did very much respect Kenobi but she knew him as Obi-Wan

The implication I take from her message, though, is that she had never met him - and never really did, since he died during the rescue. So it would be weird for her to name her child after him either way.

Yeah I always thought she only knew him by reputation.

Since he's been in hiding since she was born, it would be very weird if she knew him in person. But he was very important to her rescue, so she might have wanted to name her child in honour of him, but 'obi-wan' was too on the nose?

I mean obviously out of universe it was the only available "legacy" name that people could be sure to recognize that wasn't Anakin, which would have been WAY too on the nose

From an out of universe perspective that's why Ben is a good name, because it clearly references an older character but isn't his real name so it's easy to distinguish between them
