You know what's interesting? Star Wars is inarguably better at alien creature design than Star Trek. But Star Trek is much better at alien worldbuilding / characterization than Star Wars.

Even with CGI - Andy Serkis plays all the mocap characters in everything because it's a legitimately difficult skill

I would argue that even in a fully animated series, where this problem is reduced the most, it's still a problem - designing and animating a truly alien character in such a way that we can relate to it enough for it to carry a story is an inherent challenge

It's also because the two franchises are dealing with different themes. Star Trek is about being a United Nations ambassador working for Space NATO; Star Wars is about dynastic family drama in the Space Roman Empire.

I mean, sort of When Star Wars started it was just a wild pulp adventure in space, the family drama stuff is a retcon
