I have read the Attack Helicopter story, I don't know if it's transphobic or trying to be deconstructive of transphobia, I question the return on investment bigots would get for publishing short sff, but I have one big issue with criticisms I'm seeing of it

Don't claim trans people wouldn't join the military in fairly significant numbers in exchange for a full body rebuild. I know I would, even though it would be morally wrong. We can debate whether admitting this is prudent, but to deny it is absurd

I think this misunderstands the story because I'm pretty sure the POV character is not literally a helicopter. She has the gender of attack helicopter. She's a pilot whose gender identity brain hardware had been fucked with to make her a better pilot.

I got the impression there was at least some Pacific Rim drifting type identification with the hardware going on (except taken farther than Pacific Rim, bc it's permanent). It's one of my personal special sf interests (body replacement with inhuman things) so it interests me

Yeah but there's no genuinely far future cybernetics stuff going on, the connection to the actual helicopter is all explained by tech that's quite mundane by our standards

A computer voice that sounds like the narrator's mother in order to trigger feelings of comfort, a proximity alarm that pokes at a sensitive nerve in her spine to create urgency, etc There's no actual "jacking in" or anything

This story seems really insistent, in fact, on emphasizing the idea that there's been no real physical transformation Even the narrator's "procedure" to get her new gender may or may not have been actual surgery

Well, okay, no, it does actually say "neurosurgery", I was wrong about that Still though Has anyone commented on the idea that if this surgery were possible then it's just trans conversion therapy

Like, sure, okay, there's this wacky idea that the Air Force uses it to make perfect flight crews by making them identify with the helicopter, whatever Are there regular parents just using a much simpler version of this surgery to make kids cis

That's the weird thing about this story, it says that the advance of trans "theory" led to acceptance of "plastic gender" which led to this state of affairs But that sounds wrong to me Isn't the "plasticity" of gender something a lot of people reject, at least for themselves

Yeah, that's why I had to interpret there being a physical procedure to hijack gender in order for this to work. I took this to be super immoral and as just what people who blow up highschools do.

I do believe there is a physical basis for being trans which is why physical interventions like HRT help people. I am NOT a transmed because I don't think a diagnostic could ever contradict a person's incorrigible self report.
