Really hope 2020 doesn't become the year Star Trek went from "aspirationally optimistic" to "unrealistically optimistic" in my eyes, but the outlook doesn't look so great tbh

Honestly the most unrealistic (and weirdly common) thing in STAR TREK is that anyone in the 23rd/24th centuries would look upon vehicles powered by internal combustion engines with anything other than utter horror

I mean, horses were a complete disaster too when cities really got going, but nostalgia *extremely* won out on that front. =/

Yeah the use of horses in 1800s cities was a massive public health hazard and led to widespread cruelty to the animals Horse shit everywhere, sometimes with dead horses abandoned in the same piles

But now that that's not a thing anymore because almost nobody actually uses horses for a practical purpose anymore, the occasional horse drawn carriage is charming and quaint

You can say that for almost everything Coal fired steam technology made the air in London almost unbreathable and straight up killed thousands of people But now there's a whole "-punk" aesthetic around it
