(There's also some class/race stuff wrapped up in that which I won't get into) But I mean that's why trans men are three times as likely (proportionally) to enlist than cis women It's an ugly but effective means of getting halfway to the gender/social role they want to occupy

Pre-Chelsea, trans men in the military also dealt with a lot less BS than trans women in the military. This is just a fact Because, go figure, a woman becoming a man is better for every part of the military's cultural bottom line, whereas the reverse is practically sedition

So the irony of the protagonist of this story supposedly being "brainwashed" to have a gender that was deemed more advantageous to mission readiness than her own... like, that IS what the culture of the military ACTUALLY FUCKING DOES, BY DESIGN To a lesser but very REAL extent

And I mean you can look at me as an example I was using male pronouns in high school but that was basically the sum total of my maleness at the time, for all intents and purposes I was just a tomboyish girl Then to be in the military I had to shave my head and change my bodypic.twitter.com/Mj3BI1Xg8h

The military was forcing me to mantle a kind of maleness designed to their specifications as a prerequisite to be accepted like what T!RFs scaremonger about supportive parents doing to tomboyish girls except somebody beat them to mutilating my body without consent

So yeah what I kind of fucking hate about this story is the implication that the military would only ever do this sort of shit after appropriating the language of trans-positive leftist academics and queer theorists Like uh no militaries have literally been doing this forever

And that's the really nasty undercurrent If the theme of this story was genuinely "it's horrible what the military does to control and dictate people's gender" it'd be a good story But instead it's "it's horrible what _queer theory_ does to control and dictate people's gender"

And in the course of exploring that theme it then asks "lol what if the MILITARY used queer theory?" like how the fuck do you do this much research on helicopters to write this story and not know a fucking thing about being a woman or trans in the actual fucking military

Somebody with my experiences could also actually meaningfully satirize the NASA mindset of Flight Med and how they hold this social construct of what traits comprise a "mint condition, zero misprints" human and basically disqualify anybody else as "broken" The writer didn't

I passed the altitude chamber tests and everything there's no reason why my gender identity or my feelings about my teachers in middle school in 2002 would have affected my ability to sit on a plane and work a computer but those things weren't "sexy" so yeah fuck you, DNIF'ed

I mean... they may not have seen it as an issue of "ability" in that sense so much as reliability/loyalty
