To a certain extent, these are comorbid phenomena- TERFs generally reject anything that smacks of "postmodernism", people who loathe critical theory generally are ragingly transphobic, but it's intriguing to imagine just what species of bigot we have under the microscope here.

The basic elements of the story, though, are meant to make the story seem ostensibly progressive. You have the US military being evil and stupid, you have artificial intelligences behaving in unfathomable ways, you have a world where climate change has desertified the US...

In other words, on the surface this story is written, and the pseudonym chosen, to make it seem like it was written by someone who might conceivably be, if not trans specifically, at least someone who would be down with critical theories of gender.

And the transphobia requires digging into the story a bit. On the surface, you see, it seems like it might be gender affirming, but let's stop and take a reality check here. Let's shear away the science-fictional elements of the story and treat this as a-

-straightforward story about a trans person which is going through a lot of metaphors. Thus, this story is about how an AFAB person who has come out as nonbinary still is essentially feminine in how they conceive of the world!

I'm not sure, again, if this is indulging in TERFery about how transness will erase lesbians (I doubt it) or if this is a broader case about how genuine queerness is rare and most people who claim it are just pretending. Disgusting either way.

A couple quibbles - I don't read the gunner as AMAB There's nothing that specifically says they are, and notably when it describes the two of them having sex there's no reference to PIV

Replying to @arthur_affect @EffInvictus
Also, before her "transition" the narrator wasn't a lesbian - it says she only dated men and her attraction to women was ambiguous
