AN ENTIRE GALAXY OF TRILLIONS AND YOU HAVE A "TRADITION" OF TWO. FUCKING. PEOPLE! it's a narrative dead end

I don’t think so. I don’t think having tons of dark Jedi wandering the galaxy makes the setting more interesting. Having them be incredibly rare and frightening is more compelling imo.

The subversive in me is honestly annoyed with the "light side good, dark side bad" dichotomy Like there has to be a situation where the serenity of the Light fucked everything up and a righteously angry, good-aligned Dark side practitioner had to tear it all down

*points at FF14 Shadowbringers* But really that's just not SW.

Yeah I don’t hate that as a story beat in some other setting but I hate it for SW in particular in which the “dark side” literally embodies fascist values. There are no both sides there.

The Sith are fascist, the dark side of the force is just...emotions and emotional turbulence. The light side thing about having no emotions and tranquility could become incredibly oppressive if a practitioner wanted to externalize that quiet onto the universe.

I would argue that whole *thing* is a slightly different set of premises than the work is necessarily intending. Mind I tend to find most "Bad Light" stuff ultimately "what if Good And No Suffering but Too Much", but SW is debatably even playing I that sphere.

The way to go with Bad Light is more of a..."this is negative peace". A smothering of tension and dissent by any means. Much more of a "suffer quietly or we're gonna make you be quiet" kind of thing.

I would be very very curious what you think of ShB, which has this but other elements of mindless unjust hedonism and such. But the point is, it's kind of a leap?

Not really? The Force in Star Wars borrows heavily from the Eternal Tao, but it wildly misses the point of what Yin and Yang are and just goes "Yin is shit, Yang is best"

Except it doesn't fully accurately map onto yin and yang, in a lot of ways the Sith are yang and the Jedi are yin by ancient standards (remember yang is "hot" and yin "cold")
