we can see this in the evolution of slashers, where yes of a certainty the original Final Girls were virginal and pure and their friends weren't but modern horror eschews that, often very deliberately yet the story still plays on the same goddamn beats it was never essential.

Again, Carpenter said he never intended Laurie Strode to be read as "virginal and pure" The irony he intended was a much more practical one, that by being forced into a boring night at home babysitting she's exposed to danger less than her friends out having fun

But it's not that she doesn't WANT to party, or hasn't partied before The whole point of them inviting her out and her reluctantly refusing is that she has

A lot of ingredients go into making the Final Girl stereotype and most of them taken in isolation are just about the practicalities of drama than morality Of course it's the one friend who's stuck at work who lives while their friends out having fun are getting picked off

Just like if you want to keep ratcheting tension up then obviously it's the least experienced and skilled character who keeps surviving while the older and wiser and tougher characters fail

I mean hey look - the actual explicit codifier of the Final Girl concept is Friday the 13th, in that the killer's motive is explicitly stated to be hunting down irresponsible partying teenagers But the Final Girls don't actually survive because they're "pure'

The Final Girl of the original Friday the 13th, Alice, *isn't* purer than her colleagues She smokes weed with them, she plays strip Monopoly with them, and she's implied to be having sex with Mr. Christy, her older boss (which is much more scandalous than Jack and Marcie)

Pamela Voorhees *doesn't* judge her as being more worthy to live than the others, indeed the fact that she's the Final Girl means she's the one Pamela delivers her whole rant about irresponsible fornicating youths to And Jason kills her off right away in Pt. 2

(That's because Adrienne King wanted more money to come back, but still) Cabin in the Woods directly references this, with their "Virgin", Dana, established to have recently ended an illicit affair with her college professor

The "virgin" thing seems to mostly be a product of the tradition of slashers killing a couple while they're having sex, meaning that having sex *during the movie* is a death sentence (But so is pooping, or taking a shower, or getting in the car to drive to the police station)

But yeah the Final Girl of Friday the 13th Pt. 2, Ginny, is the same deal She drinks, she parties, she's sleeping with her boss, he wants to have sex but she makes a joke letting him know she's on her period (Maybe that's the protection against slashers)

Ash Williams in Evil Dead is an interesting contrast to this, as the rare male (and eventually, hypermasculine) survivor in a horror series.

In fact Friday the 13th started the tradition of what Final Girl theorists call the "decoy Final Girl", which is a question begging definition The first movie *starts* with a pure innocent, the sweet starry eyed girl hitchhiking to Crystal Lake whose dream job is helping kids

She's the *first one killed* in the present day, to shock the audience and upset them, and is certainly much more innocent than Alice, without any of the needed savvy or ruthlessness to realize the lady she hitched a ride from is the killer
