Assuming she only knows what she knew before the beginning of TFA also ignores everything she learns both on and off screen over the course of the next two films.

Fair, she'll probably have had history lessons, and the Jedi texts have information (how that info is still valid after all that time is a different topic).

But I feel they still responded too personally, as if they knew him, not as if they've been told about him in a history lesson.

Keep in mind that Rey, at least, knew the name "Darth Sidious" offhand when Luke started quoting cynical /r/StarWars threads in TLJ

Lord, I’d forgotten that Johnson wrote that goofy-ass terrible prequel name into TLJ. The scene as executed is so good (particularly how Hamill sells it), but yeah can’t really complain about them assuming ppl know obscure shit after that lol

Him using the name "Darth Sidious" actually has pretty big plot implications - back in the prequels the whole deal was the Jedi knew Darth Sidious was the name of the Separatists' mysterious backer and Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus and Darth Maul's mentor

For Luke to casually namedrop "Sidious" to mean "Palpatine" means that whole conspiracy - where Palpatine actually started the war he got all the credit for saving the Republic from - is now public historical knowledge

Curious what the in-universe explanation for that would be. Yoda, Bail, or Obi-wan write it up and store it in R2's memory banks or what?

My headcanon is Luke himself did the digging, or at least was the first one to put together the pieces that other people did the digging for

Ah yeah—I'd like some treatment of Luke pouring over some Imperial records Gandalf-style in Coruscant, following up leads he found in notes left behind by the original three Rebel conspirators.

I don't actually think TRoS contradicts TLJ that hard by depicting Luke as having been a busy galaxytrotting archeologist before his long exile I always headcanoned that *before* Luke fell into despair and gave it all up there was a phase where he really, really tried

I don't think it contradicts TLJ at ALL in that way; he obviously didn't start his academy immediately. Kylo was part of the first class and he was still in training five years before TFA

And Luke was, what, 23 when he killed the Emperor? He's middle aged in the Jedi temple flashbacks we see. He had a LONG time in between.

Same, it really lines up with what I’d always imagined Luke to be doing: wandering the galaxy trying to live up to his mantle as last of the Jedi, an order he wasn’t alive to even see and make sense of their legacy for a new generation.

At one point really believing Ben's fall was all due to Palpatine's machinations and thinking he could somehow fix it if he just dug up the very last bits of Palpatine's legacy and neutralize them (The real failing of TRoS was portraying this mad obsession as correct and valid)

Which is so weird because it’s emphatically *not* what the end of the movie is saying. You’d have to straight up ignore the last twenty minutes and Luke’s last speech.

Is that a headcanon? I thought TFA and TLJ were pretty clear that Luke did the whole "Jedi master training a bunch of padawans" thing fairly successfully until Ben happened. He had a great big temple/monastery thing and was already Old Man Luke when Ben turned, after all.
