Ehh. I mean. The first three Dresden Files *are* fucking awful. But also, I thought it was that he was originally specifically opposed to writing Urban Fantasy?

He wanted to pursue epic fantasy rather than urban fantasy, yes, but he had in fact already started working on what would become the Dresden Files and she told him specifically what he needed to change to get it published

That's why the series kind of starts in medias res, Dresden's backstory about being raised as an orphan by Justin DuMorne was from an earlier manuscript he didn't feel like taking the effort to rewrite to make it fit the series
