That's why the series kind of starts in medias res, Dresden's backstory about being raised as an orphan by Justin DuMorne was from an earlier manuscript he didn't feel like taking the effort to rewrite to make it fit the series

Or you could say write what you love... He was LARPing in his spare time and ended up writing about a cool detective mage. I am sure that teacher gave similar advice to hundreds of other writers who did not make it. Or perhaps he combined fantasy/detective genre at a lucky time
