He got a 700B stimulus, and the “without stimulus” projection was, it turns out, ludicrously overconfident/massively underestimated the size of the upper decker the GOP has left in the american economy

His more energetic advisors advocated 1.6T in stimulus, but Obama wanted bipartisan support, and the price of Snowe, Collins, and Specter (getting to 62 votes, filibuster proof) was reduced size of the stimulus

It is true that if Obama had recognized that the GOP is literally a treasonous insurgent party that actively wanted to harm the country so long as Obama could be blamed for it, he would have made policy without considering GOP views and would have recognized the need for a NND

Honestly I don't know how much recognizing that helps one way or the other. The GOP still *had* those veto points; Obama couldn't bully-pulpit anything he wanted into existence.

The filibuster isn't in the Constitution and no one planned for its existence - the word "filibuster" literally means "pirate" and refers to the idea of hijacking the session through a procedural loophole The idea that not having a filibuster is a "dictatorship" is rich

The adoption of a "virtual filibuster" in 1970 makes a joke out of the whole thing The original idea of the filibuster was being able to bring business in the Senate to a halt as a desperate last ditch measure Not just requiring a supermajority to pass all legislation forever

we wouldn't be in this mess if generations of people hadn't grown up watching Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

Incidentally, I wonder if, given Capra's politics, the corruption being about dam-building was anti-New-Deal propaganda. (it's also unclear why an insider land trading scheme - the real one or the one Smith is accused of - depends on what purpose the land is ultimately used for)

Mr Smith Goes to Washington was absolutely a tendentious swipe at the "big city Democratic Party machine"
