Seriously if I wanted to give one blanket piece of advice as of the current year that would protect people from scams it'd be 1) Don't have a landline 2) If you must have a landline "for emergencies", never pick it up when it rings Let it go to voicemail and screen your callshttps://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1215020166775336960 …

I used to get them to my mobile all the time asking me to join some UK lotto scam. Eventually I told them that as much fun as messing with them was I had to stop taking their calls because I was working IT security for a large gambling organisation now and didn't have the time.

I've written dozens of stories about phone scams: -No government agency is going to call you and pressure you for money. They would mail you any needed notices. -Hang up, look up the agency's number, and call them. -If they ask for gift cards or a moneygram it's a scam.

We got a landline, well VOIP specifically because I have young kids that can use it in emergencies. We leave the ringer off altogether.
