Seriously though the justification most old people have that they keep a landline "for emergencies" is probably greatly outweighed by the landline being a giant open door for spammers and scammers aimed at their exact demographic

At this point, robocall scams are doing this to all types of phone based voice calls, landline or otherwise.

True, but ime the landlines get it worse. My parents don't even pick theirs up anymore because the odds of a useful call are so slim. (Which has meant calling a few elderly relatives back a week late, but… eh)

Yeah the scammers know that landlines are much riper pickings than cell numbers, and it's much much easier to legally obtain a big dump of active landline numbers and put them in an autodialer
