The "anti-war" argument that if you say Soleimani was bad you're actually advocating for war with Iran is dumb on its face, and also tacitly accepts the extremely pro-war premise that "he was bad" is sufficient justification for the use of military force.

Hard disagree. This is about messaging. “He was a bad guy but...” is terrible as propaganda. You don’t preemptively concede points to the other side, even if they might be true. *tl;dr* if you think Soleimani’s character has zero bearing on the issue, don’t bring it up!!!
