Like seriously, if Rey is okay picking a family name she isn't related to, why didn't she just *do* that? Why didn't she *already* call herself Rey Skywalker since Luke was her hero? Why didn't she pick Solo after Han died?

I would guess that most people in Han's situation would've just tried to make something up to borrow a common surname ("I'm Han... Smith") and thus made it even more common, or used something like a place name

The way the recruiter phrases his question ("Who are your people?") indicates this is probably not uncommon, a bunch of people signing up under the equivalent of names like "Han Pittsburgh" or "Han Cleveland"
