Ok now that I understand some stuff about Japanese pluralization or lack thereof, can someone explain to me why "First Children," etc. are more "literal" translations than "Child"? X の子供, why is that plural?

I've never watched Eva without the dub because I follow the English VAs for both versions on here and find it more entertaining to see their versions. So I had no idea what was being said in Japanese.

(Eva is the only anime I watch the dubs of fwiw)

If you see a subtitle saying 子供 with the kana チルドレン next to it it means the actual word the character is saying is "children" in English but it's letting the audience know it means the same thing as the Japanese "kodomo"
