Ok now that I understand some stuff about Japanese pluralization or lack thereof, can someone explain to me why "First Children," etc. are more "literal" translations than "Child"? X の子供, why is that plural?

In this case it's an arbitrary writing decision to use foreign language to sound cool They had an American guy consulting on the show who told them using the English word "children" in the singular wasn't cool or ominous, just wrong, but they didn't listen

You may be confused because you're seeing 子供 with furigana (kana written next to kanji as a pronunciation guide), which is sometimes done for foreign words in Japanese

I've never watched Eva without the dub because I follow the English VAs for both versions on here and find it more entertaining to see their versions. So I had no idea what was being said in Japanese.
