I do in fact find all of the following to make Superman stories less interesting - he's too powerful - he lacks personal epic tragedy - his morality is too "goody two shoes" That's how I've always felt. I feel like the defensive dismissing of people who agree is a little rude

Superman is a massive victim of "power creep", thanks to being the central superhero for whom the genre is named It's also because Captain Marvel got sued by DC and they ended up getting Captain Marvel writers to write for Superman, giving him more "magic" powers

But yeah you can tell if you think of the old taglines he used to have in the old days He could "leap tall buildings in a single bound" because he wasn't actually capable of self directed flight yet

right, and "more powerful than a speeding bullet" rather than "more powerful than the sun!" which is where we're at now.

The original tagline said he "can't be harmed by anything short of an exploding shell", when of course Silver Age Superman shrugs off all conventional explosives

I think they topped out at nuclear weapons, like because of the cultural significance of nukes we've decided that's the one manmade weapon that can hurt him

Although even in the famous scene in The Dark Knight Returns it's not really that the nuke hurt him so much as it cut him off from the sun (Which itself is silly, he doesn't lose his powers at night or anything)

I think there’s some line earlier in the DKR that suggests that in the intervening years either some injury or just age has made him more sun-dependent for his powers. I could be wrong about that, though.

Kingdom Come, meanwhile, posited that after years of absorbing sunlight he gradually became more immune to harm until, in old age, kryptonite couldn't hurt him anymore.
