The big problem w/the ST is that *everybody* is written as a nobody. Not just Rey. Like literally every new character could turn out to be someone else or related to someone else.

I think this is b/c JJA basically approached TFA as if it were a TV pilot. Star Wars: The New Adventures. And the characters were written to be gradually revealed as whoever he and Kasdan had imagined them to be.

I mean that's fine... if he had actually developed them Abrams once knew how to do this. I watched ALIAS and it handled this okay

Yeah, but that's on a diff scale. After watching ANH for the first time you could easily come up with pocket bios for every character. Where they were from, what they did, what they were like, etc. You can't do this with anybody new in TFA. Everyone is potentially someone else.

TFA in general suffers from a complete lack of a sense that any of it takes place in a larger context. there's not even the illusion of depth; it's clear that the universe begins and ends on screen

It's because JJA is shit at worldbuilding. And he figured the audience didn't want to hear about the greater galactic situation either b/c that was what everyone hated about the PT. Meanwhile EVERY OTHER MAJOR FRANCHISE IN CREATION is doing massive worldbuilding and it's fine.

There was a compromise to be found. That said, I feel TFA had metaphoric depth for when it came out, so clearly being a metaphor for growing up in the wreckage of a fascism people never got over

"scavenging" is such a powerful motif which again TRoS just drops

What if Luke had given his old X-Wing to Ben and Rey was the one who somehow scavenged a TIE Fighter from the wreckage of the Death Star

I mean I'm not gonna lie, the image of Luke "doing the impossible" by raising his drowned X-Wing as a ghost was a pitch Rian sent right over the plate that JJ hit for a home run

Yeah no that was a Chekov's gun and I'm glad it fired. But it could have happened better
