Why not, if the person you're talking to can't afford you? Is one supposed to devalue one's work?

The fact is the cousin is desperate and has no other options and it's a choice between shelling out the $2000 or just not having that vacation she's been looking forward to all this time A mature person would be glad to at least have the choice

The whole "Money doesn't change hands between family" thing doesn't work in many situations precisely because our society isn't as homogeneous anymore The cousin can't just promise to pay OP back in kind because OP doesn't have kids who need babysitting and possibly never will

It's not an unreasonable price for many reasons, not even including her own level of income, and commenters have pointed out that if the husband just flips out like this over $2,000 he probably wasn't going to pay up for $1,000 either

Well then it's still really the cousin who's TA for pushing the issue by offering to pay, and then when told "My freelance rates are pretty high" continuing to press the issue And she was TA because she was desperate, yeah, but your poor planning isn't other people's emergency

I dunno, she doesn't go into her cousin's family financial situation but the issue of the sticker shock here sounds like more of a cultural thing than a truly practical thing Like if she definitely knew they were too poor to objectively afford it she would've mentioned it

Honestly at short notice over Christmas asking someone to watch your kids for three days when you don't have anyone you actually know willing to do it may well be impossible
